Figure DRD-12. Changes in numbers and ratio of drug-induced deaths in the EU Member States, Croatia and Norway [see all figures in this series...]

Part (ii) Changes between 2003 and 2007/8

* Countries where 2007 data were used

Bulgaria and Romania both reported large relative increases in drug-induced deaths, the 2007/8 figure being 4.9 times the 2003 figure for Bulgaria (74/15), and 4.7 times for Romania (33/7). The points have been omitted from the graph to allow a reasonable scale for the rest of the countries.

For Austria, in the year 2008 the number of cases on which no autopsy has been performed tripled (up to 32 cases) in comparison with previous years. Thus the number reported for 2008 might be the lower limit, adding up to 201 cases if all 32 suspicious non confirmed cases were included so the figure for 2007 has been used.

Squares above the line represent an increase while squares below the line represent decreases.

In Cyprus and Slovakia, the first year with available data is 2004.

Number of cases per country per year are presented in Table DRD-2.

In some countries, the ‘national definitions’ include a limited number of cases of deaths indirectly related to drug use. See Methodological notes in the Statistical bulletin.
